What shower gel should you use for itchy skin?

What shower gel should you use for itchy skin?

Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it plays a powerful role in keeping you safe and protected. That’s why it’s so important to keep it healthy. However, sometimes you may experience irritated, itchy skin. If this happens, you may want to start looking at the products you put on your skin and perhaps try a fragrance free body wash or a shower gel for itchy skin. Take our Skin Type Finder test to discover the type of skin you have and the type of products you could be using to help bring relief.

What is itchy skin?

Itchy skin can be really uncomfortable. Scratching it can cause damage to your skin or make the itching worse, so you should try to avoid doing this. Depending on the reasons for itching on the skin it could look red, rough or even bumpy. The good news is that itchy skin is not usually a sign of anything serious and you can often treat itching at home.

Itchy skin causes

Irritated, itchy skin can have many different causes. Identifying your itchy skin causes can help you to decide how to treat it and get relief from any discomfort you have and to minimise further itching.

  • Skin reactions: Sometimes, harsh chemicals in the skincare products you use can cause irritation and itchy skin. This will usually happen if you have sensitive skin or allergies. Itchiness can also be caused by allergies, hives or a reaction to the sun that causes a heat rash.
  • Skin conditions: Some of the conditions that can cause itching on the skin are dandruff, eczema and psoriasis.
  • Skin infections: Certain fungal infections like thrush, ringworm and athlete’s foot can cause itchy skin.
  • Parasites or insects: There are some parasites, mites and insects that can cause itchy skin conditions like scabies. Also, having lice will cause your skin to itch.

Why your current shower gel may cause itchy skin and irritation

If you have a sensitive skin type or suffer from allergies, itchy skin and irritation may be caused or made worse by the ingredients used in your regular shower gel, soap or body wash. These ingredients can also upset the balance of your skin’s microbiome, which works to keep you protected and healthy. That’s why you should try to look out for products that contain fewer, more carefully selected ingredients, like a shower gel for itchy skin or a soap and fragrance free body wash.

At Sanex, we have a range of shower gels that can help to minimise skin irritation and itchiness, as well as look after your skin’s microbiome.

What helps itchy skin?

There are a few, easy ways to help treat itching and irritation.

  • Your body wash: Choose a shower gel for itchy skin or a soap and fragrance free body wash, which can help to minimise sensitive, itchy skin. This is a great solution if you’ve had a reaction to certain chemicals in other products. Look out for hypoallergenic products that contain fewer, more carefully selected ingredients.
  • Laundry: Using a laundry detergent and softener that’s designed for sensitive skin can also help to minimise itchy skin.
  • Don’t scratch: Even though it may be temporary relief, it could make the itching worse. Rather pat or tap your skin to help ease the itching. You can also keep a cool damp towel on your skin to help relieve symptoms.
  • Skincare: Keep a look out for fragrance free moisturisers and skincare products as the fragrances may cause itchy skin.
